La Manga del Mar Menor
This is the Strip of sleeve of land (the literal translation of la manga is sleeve) that runs north south from Cabo de Palos in the south almost to Lo Pagan and San Pedro in the north and all but encloses the lagoon, the Mar Menor.
The width of La Manga can be from 1km at some places; in others it is wide enough for the road with a beach on either side. La Manga runs 18km from south to north and divides the two seas of the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor, or Little Sea. Needless to say, there are miles upon miles of stunning beaches.

La Manga is one of the best seaside towns you can imagine. The warm shallow waters of the Mar Menor are safe for children. The Mar Menor reaches a maximum depth of 9m at its deepest point and you have to wade out a long way into the water before reaching waist height. Being so shallow and as a result warm, the water has a high concentration of mineral salts, and has unique buoyancy rarely experienced in Europe. The World Health Organisation recognises the region as one of the healthiest in the world. Not surprisingly the healing properties of the waters of the Mar Menor are renowned world wide. Conditions known to benefit from the mineral salts range from skin complaints, rheumatism, arthritis and even throat infections, although I am sure the water wont taste very nice. Also ideal for water sports, learning to sail, wind surf or jet ski … no wet suits required in this climate.
The Mediterranean on the other hand, and literally on the other side of the road has a different personality altogether. Characterised by endless stretches of white sandy beaches with fine soft sand and a colder sea, the water takes on a beautiful turquoise colour in the height of summer. Beach bars are plentiful and you can relax and enjoy fantastic days on the beach.
La Manga the town has so many different faces and personalities. At the northern end long stretches or quiet of deserted beaches meet the cool waters of the Mediterranean or the shallow water of the Mar Menor, very tranquil and very relaxing. Ideal for family holidays the marina at the Puerto Tomas Maestre offer beaches by day, ferry trips and plenty of boats. By night the family friendly restaurants offer excellent value for money and relaxing eating out. With very little traffic it is quiet and relaxing and makes for a wonderful family holiday. Many of our clients who visit the marina and don’t go to the expense of hiring a car as they find that all that they need is on their doorstep.
The southern end, wider and more densely populated is more frantic and exciting. There are still quieter spots, however the areas of Zoco and Cavannah Square are buzzing with bars and restaurants. Clubs that stay open til dawn are still few and far between but there are two or three that will help you to stay up to see the sunrise.
