This Sunday, 17th April, the city of Elche - just south of Alicante airport - will host their spectacular Palm Sunday parade and celebration. The celebrations date back as far as 1371, and the day was declared a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest in 1997. Elche is about 30 minutes from San Javier and 20 minutes from Murcia city. For months, artisans in the Elche (recognised internationally for the extensive palm groves in and around the city) work to create incredibly intricate works of art made from blanched palm leaves. These works of art depict complex figures related to the events of Holy Week or Elche’s monuments and traditions. Examples are made especially for the Spanish royal family and the Pope, and are shipped off to Madrid and Rome a few days before Palm Sunday. The rest remain in Elche, where they are paraded on Palm Sunday during the day’s main attraction: the Palm Procession. Here are a couple of short videos of Elche's Palm Sunday: a great day out for the family.
