Lorca Earthquake Disaster – Benefit Concert in Puerto de Mazarrón 3pm Saturday 21st May At an unbelievable short notice, the Expat community in Mazarrón and surrounding area has joined together to arrange a benefit concert in aid of Lorca after the devastating earthquake the town suffered in the afternoon of 11th May.
The initiative came Thursday evening from president for PALS (Protection and Life Saving), Ken Payne, calling on his vast number of contacts in the area, asking everybody to use their “talent and drive to achieve this”, “a really great event for a truly worthwhile cause”. Early on board was the local radio station’s Steve Tucker, Costa Cálida International Radio and councillor Jackie Galvez. By Friday, courtesy of Mazarrón’s mayor, Francisco Blaya, the venue was booked, sound system arranged through Camposol Fiesta Committee, and tickets and posters produced and distributed. On Saturday, the Mayor offered to provide table and chairs for the event, but due to restricted space, the organizers decided that it was more feasible that those attending bring their own chairs. The support from the Mayor’s office in the Town Hall has been excellent, as they have provided a stage, permits for the bar in situ, and having Cruz Roja standing by during the event. Masses of performers have agreed to appear with all types of music, with rock and blues being predominant. Several other organisations, groups and individuals have been on hand to help and assist in arranging the event, making their expertise and resources available in the name of solidarity; unfortunately too many to mention each of them. Amazing what can be achieved! It will be a great event in the spirit of solidarity and aid. A huge attendance is anticipated, so the organisers advise the public is to arrive early. DETAILS Venue: Sports Pavilion, Playasol 1, Puerto de Mazarrón (from the roundabout at Lidls, up the hill having Barclays Bank on your right hand, past the old cinema, turn left at the traffic lights – the pavilion is next to the school). Lots of parking! Time: Saturday 21st May. Doors open 2:30 pm, with concert starting 3 pm. End 10 pm (residential area) Programme: By virtue has to be a surprise, as many of the artists have other bookings throughout the day. But the event will be a wall-to-wall, continuous musical scene. Others: Huge raffle, auction, bar Price: 5 Euros perticket, available from various outlets and at the entrance. Note! PALS have over the past 10 years supplied 160,000 Euros worth of life saving equipment to the emergency services and hospitals, incl. a catastrophe tent (18,500 Euros) to the 112-service in Mazarrón last year, and were due to present 8 beds for it last week. However, no official hand-over took place, as both tent and beds are in use in Lorca. PALS, in cooperation with the radio station, are acting as coordinator of the benefit concert, but this is a community effort so they would like to thank everybody involved for their input. |
